What’s the Difference between a dentist and orthodontist?

Many ask us this question! A dentist is most concerned with overall oral health. They treat decayed teeth (fillings) and usually provide services such as crowns, veneers or bonding to improve the appearance and function of teeth that have decayed or are misshapen or broken.

An orthodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontists spend 2-3 more years (or 3,700 hours) in university than dentists to become accredited specialists focused on the movement of teeth, jawbones, facial bones, and soft tissue.

General dentists are licensed to practice dentistry, and they sometimes provide specialty care, even if they do not have formal post-dental school training.

    Did you know?

    • All orthodontists are dentists, but only about 4% of dentists are orthodontists
    • Years of education: 4-year undergraduate degree + 4-year dental degree + additional 2-3 year graduate degree
