Today is Transgender Day of Visibility. At Loblaw, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all our colleagues and community members. To mark this important day, we've raised the transgender flag at our head office as a visible symbol of our solidarity and support. We've also partnered with The 519 to provide our colleagues with a valuable educational webinar to deepen their understanding and promote allyship for transgender and gender diverse colleagues. Surrey is one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, and rapid growth in the region has created strain on local health systems. Last summer, we had the opportunity to sit down with the Mayor of Surrey and discuss our clinic model as a potential solution to help alleviate some of that strain. The mayor challenged us at the time to think bigger – and aim for five clinics in order to make a meaningful impact across the city. We took that challenge to heart and today our team was on the ground to officially commemorate the opening of the first of seven Pharmacy Care Clinics coming to Surrey in 2025. Thank you to Minister Osborne, Minister of Health and the Government of British Columbia, Mayor Brenda Locke and the City of Surrey, local MLA’s Jessie Sunner in Surrey-Newton and Amna Shah in Surrey City Centre as well as Geraldine Vance and the BC Pharmacy Association for your partnership and support in making these seven clinics a reality for the residents of Surrey – and for joining us to commemorate the occasion.

Pharmacy Appreciation Month is nearly over, but my appreciation for the incredible teams I work with is year-round. As a pharmacy owner, I’m continuously proud of the care, dedication, and compassion our pharmacy teams bring to their work every single day. Across both locations, we’re lucky to have six pharmacists, two (soon-to-be three) registered pharmacy technicians, three UBC pharmacy students, and eleven pharmacy assistants—each one bringing their own unique talents to the table. Team 2134 was even recently voted Best Pharmacy in Maple Ridge for the second year in a row! There are many meaningful stories that come out of our pharmacies, but this one stands out as a recent favorite: a patient, who had transferred in a few months back, mentioned that he hadn't been feeling well for quite some time. As he described his symptoms, our pharmacy team recognized what appeared to be classic indicators of undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes. He also shared that he did not have a regular healthcare provider and hadn't had bloodwork done in a very long time. Recognizing an opportunity to assist, we suggested that we could conduct an A1C test in the pharmacy. The patient was surprised, as he was unaware that some pharmacies are able to provide such services. Led by our fourth-year UBC practicum student, Anthony, we performed an A1C test as well as a lipid test. The results were concerning, revealing a significantly elevated A1C, indicative of poorly managed blood sugar levels. We carefully explained the results and advised him to take our action plan to a walk-in clinic. The next morning, he returned with a new prescription for diabetes medication. He had been completely unaware of his condition and the potential health risks. We have been providing him with ongoing support for managing his condition ever since, and he has been incredibly grateful for our intervention. This experience is a powerful reminder that pharmacy teams do so much more than dispense medications—we offer accessible, proactive care that can change lives.
