Kitchener is a Canadian city situated south-west of Ontario. Formerly known as Berlin from 1914-1916, the name Kitchener was chosen as an homage to Herbert Kitchener, a Secretary of State during the First World War. The population of Kitchener is 204, 668 comprised of people of German, English, French, Polish, Dutch, Portuguese and Italian descent.
German culture is honoured during Kitchener-Waterloo’s Oktoberfest, one of the biggest festivals to take place in the city. This encompasses the city’s dynamic and lively community, economy and culture. It is the biggest Bavarian festival in the world apart from Germany. The Kitchener Blues Festival is equally renowned, bringing in over 65,000 visitors every year.
The New Kitchener Market is a must-see. Offering a wide range of fresh products (fruits, vegetables, cheese...) it is a multicultural center and a highly reputed destination for tourists. Downtown’s Victoria Park offers a relaxing break away from the bustle of the city. Kitchener celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2004.

Yonge and Eglinton: it’s busy, it’s bustling and it just may be the downtown of midtown, not least because of its excellent selection of local bistros and gastropubs. From a cleansing liquid lunch, old-school deli or a hot bowl of ramen, here are our top picks for restos just a hop-skip off the beaten Eglinton track.
2015 was a busy year for Toronto’s east end, from Riverdale to Cabbagetown to the Distillery. Fresh new businesses are popping up everywhere, and among them are some of the finest eateries in the city. Whether for brunch with pals, a dinner date, or dessert, there are many places to indulge without the hustle and bustle of downtown.
Toronto’s coffee scene has experienced a surge of newcomers this year, from east to west. It’s one of the things I love about the city. You can find some of the coolest cafés in odd areas and quiet corners, and busy neighbourhoods alike. From old, rundown spaces revitalized, to beautiful environments that make grabbing a cup of Joe a luxurious pastime, here are my favourite cafés that opened in 2015.
